I know cats moult but this is ridiculous. there are clumps of black hair all over her bedding and when I am petting her, her fur seems * strange* almost textured but it's not. Am not explaining this right but it doen't feel right. To look at her, her fur looks thick but when you stroke her it's quite thin. We've given her sensitive skin complete food tonight and I will see how things are over the weekend, but I can see a trip to the vet come Monday. Am sure hair loss can be stress related, does anyone know? I will google later on.

Yes... I've heard that cats can loose hairs due to stress, but it's normally happening due to excessive licking which they will often start when stressed...

Is it just a lot of hairs, or have you spotted any bald patches? At the moment Pok is moulting... and it's horrible... he's gettign rid of his winter coat, and anything he touches or anywhere he sleeps is covered in it (but this is normal for him), and that's even with me brushing him several times a day.

Above has a list of tons upon tons of causes for hailoss, but most of them indicate other symptoms too, like itchiness and redness...

Here's hopign it's only moulting... to get hr new fab coat for summer.

There isn't bald patches as far as I can tell, it just that when i seperate her hair it looks sparce. I don't really know if she is licking herself as I haven't seen her during the day, but when I go into her pen she just comes over all happy like and wants petted. Will look at that link and see what it says.

I think I know what you mean by the strange feeling fur... like fuzzy and thin?? Mads' hair on her belly went/is like that, with a couple of bauld patches. Remember we took her to the vets? It turned out that she's just formed a habit of grooming too much. I would take a guess that providing Susies skin is healthy? it could be the same thing? We find clumps of her hair about too (from where she or Bramble has pulled it out!), I think its alot more noticeably in black cats. But she's healthy, happy and well. If her skin looks sore at all, or if it gets worse (aparently aplacia? or anaplacia?? argh whats the word? sure you know what I'm trying for) is fairly common in cats? All the question marks give away that I'm not sure! lol, but why not give the vet a quick call and just ask for a bit of advice, if its worth bringing her in or not? x

Her skin looks fine Helen, it's so annoying when they are in a pen outside and you can't see them all the time. Think I will call the vet tomorrow anyway, Teddy moults but nothing like Susie. At this rate the poor thing will be needing a jumper knitted for her. Little slinky sexy Susie, needs a new coat.

The vet has just called me back and we'll take Susie in to see them on Monday, he said it could be an allergic dermetitis (sp) apparently it only takes one flea bite for this to happen or it could be ringworm. Oh nice. We'll see what they say in Monday.

Wishing you and Sexy Susie the best of luck for Monday!

Pok has a reaching to flea bites... he's never had fleas, but he was bitten by them in the garden... he got some horrible scabs on him... rushed him to the vets in hysterics, and it turned out he's highly allergic to them, and will break out in big wounds if bitten (imagine how he'd be if he actually ever had fleas?).

Poor fella. Thats one of the reasons my sister keeps her two as indoor cats, when they were rescued, Sickie the calico had virtually no fur left on her at all, from a suspected severe flea allergy, so they can't risk her going outside. Although she's healthy now (although always been a skinny girl, and looking a bit thin atm with the stress of a new intruder, bless), she does have a stress related/ocd problem whereby for no apparent reason she obsesively plucks patches of her bauld, such as at the base of her tail, she's had tests done and been back and forth to the vets, but the conclusion is is psychiatric. Her fur has never been lushious, its always been quite thin (except on her belly bizzarrely where she has lovely fluffy white fur, lol). She's been through alot, and cats get mental health problems too. I never actually put two and two together, but with the change in house situation (new baby) her fur is looking thinner still, although she is definately settling down and becoming more comfortable around the baby.... I wonder if Susie's fur has been effected by the stress of what she's been through, being taken in is a big change for her, so I wonder if its a reaction to this. Either way, I really hope she gets sorted at the vets and they work out whats causing it. It is so distressing watching them loose hair or pluck it out. x

Hope Susies trip to the vet tomorrow goes well, and you get her coat back to its natural shine.

Thanks everyone, she's a happy little soul, always purring when I go and see her, I groomed her today and not much hair came out, but it is sparce, her skin looks fine, but I don't hold her and really look as the vet will, so maybe I have missed something. The skim on her legs is the worse, her legs and down the lower sides. We'll see what the vet says, this is when I wish I stll drove and I didn't work, she would be in the vets at 9 am tomorrow. LOL.
